Special Effects
Special effects are illusions or visual tricks that are used in animation, video games and films to create imagined events. There are two groups of special effects, optical effects and mechanical effects.
Optical Effects
Also known as photographic effects, optical effects are methods in which images or film frames are created photographically. This can be done either in camera either using multiple exposure, mattes or the Schufftan process. It can also be done in post-session using an optical printer. Basically, optical effects are used to place actors or sets in a different background.
Mechanical Effects
Mechanical effects are also known as practical or physical effects. They are usually used during live film shoots. Sometimes there is the use of mechanized props including the creation of rain, wind or hail. Mechanical effects are often incorporated into the set, design and makeup.
